Home Depot stores and parking lots should not be a haven for ICE roundups

A coalition of nonpartisan progressive groups in Atlanta to rally outside of the Vinings Home Depot on Saturday, February 7th demanding an end to their tacit cooperation with ICE.

Marietta, GA - Several area Indivisible groups are joining with other progressive organizations to bring focus to Department of Homeland Security’s often indiscriminate rounding up of day laborers who regularly congregate in parking lots at Home Depot, the Atlanta-based retail giant. With more than 2,000 stores across the country, ICE’s strategy of using Home Depot locations to conduct immigration sweeps is emblematic of their deliberate intention to detain and deport people solely through racial profiling and class prejudice.

“Home Depot’s corporate presence in Atlanta gives them immense influence on our community. By turning a blind eye to ICE leveraging their store locations to conduct random, non-targeted sweeps, the company is failing to stand against blatant violations of constitutional rights, and the often-brutal tactics ICE agents employ,” said Stacey Parlotto, a leader of the Indivisible Cobb group organizing the rally.

The recent deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis and nine overall since the start of this year at the hands of ICE and CBP have shined a spotlight on their disregard for people’s civil and constitutional rights and has demonstrated little, if any, accountability for their actions. Home Depot’s silence on the role they play cannot stand.

Members of the Indivisible George Coalition rallying include groups from Cobb, Atlanta, Necessary Trouble and Clarkston (Indivisible 04). Other progressive organizations joining in this demonstration are The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), 50501 Georgia, the Woodstock Community Action Network and the NO KINGS Smyrna Activists.

“Holding this rally outside the Vinings Home Depot location is symbolic,” added Parlotto. “It stands directly across 1-285 from Home Depot’s headquarters building. Home Depot corporate cannot separate themselves from how their store locations are being used by ICE across this country to randomly harass, detain and incarcerate valued members of our communities. It’s time for them to clearly say ‘enough, no more!’”
