Groups Are Working Together To Ensure Neighbors Have A Festive Thanksgiving Feast

Marietta, GA - At a time when some of our Latino neighbors in Cobb County are increasingly concerned about indiscriminate ICE detentions and their safety, Indivisible Cobb, working alongside the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights (GLAHR), is distributing baskets of complete holiday meal ingredients to 18 Cobb families.

GLAHR’s mission is to educate and organize the Latino community in Georgia to defend and promote their civil and human rights. They work with a number of families in Cobb County who suffer from either food insecurity or some who are so intimidated by the random actions of ICE they will not leave their homes to shop for groceries.

“At this moment it is incumbent on all of us to address this issue for many in Cobb County,” said Stacey Parlotto, a member of Indivisible Cobb’s leadership team. “Our goal was to assist GLAHR in reaching our Latino neighbors to help families celebrate this Thanksgiving with a holiday meal that reflects their culture and traditions. Our members stepped up and through their generosity we were able to make sure that eighteen families had everything they needed to make that a reality.”

Packages were delivered to GLAHR over the weekend who, in turn, are now distributing these to families.

Today there are more than 88,000 of our Cobb County neighbors suffer from food insecurity, with two-thirds of those having incomes above the SNAP thresholds, and are unable to access SNAP benefits. “Without a doubt, the current economy and political climate have contributed to that number increasing,” added Parlotto.

This effort is just one of the programs Indivisible Cobb has undertaken to address the issue of food insecurity among Cobb County residents. The group is currently collecting and donating food through the East Cobb Y and the Must Ministries, as well as an ongoing campaign to raise funds designated to pay down the luncheon debt of students at several Cobb County schools.
